Consider our Low-Cost Electric Heating Programs Dual Fuel and ETS Heating Systems
Jackson Electric Cooperative offers special low energy rates for electric heat used during off-peak hours. Qualifications are noted below:
- Separate Heat Meter
The electricity used for heating is recorded on a meter which is separate from the meter for the remainder of the household's electric usage. Electric water heaters and air conditioning units are allowed on the heat meter, and will be subject to the provisions of the off-peak program.
- Radio Control
To qualify for these special rates, the separately metered electric heat must be wired so that Jackson Electric can use a radio control and signal to switch it off during peak control periods. Jackson Electric sells the required dual metering packages.
- Back-up Heat Source
Because the electric heat is controlled off during peak periods, a back-up furnace or an electric thermal storage (ETS) system will be required during these control periods.
- Peak Periods
Historically, the peak load control periods are, in large part, determined by weather conditions. They are likely to occur on the 3 to 12 coldest and 3 to 12 hottest days of the year.
Winter control times have been limited to six hours in the evening. Summer load control dictates that air conditioners and heat pumps may be cycled on and off, at 15-minute intervals, during the hottest part of the day. Both the duration and frequency of load control periods may increase in future years, as system-wide electric load patterns change.
