These are devices which are installed on the electric meter socket. They provide whole-house protection. UPS devices provide protection from surges and spikes, but also offer additional features of power conditioning and outage protection, especially desirable for computer applications. In the event of an outage, the UPS device continues to supply input electrical power to allow an orderly shutdown of the protected equipment. Run times during an outage will vary according to the UPS model and the computer. Software can be loaded into the computer which will automatically close files, should a UPS battery become drained before there is restoration of utility power.
